Dear John: Mom’s Fears Are Like Riding A Bike

**After a long hiatus for some reason – most likely boredom – I have decided to return to the advice game but with a little re-branding. Instead of being called Jaw With Jaw I have decide to go with the more traditional Dear John. Yes, it’s cheesy, I know. But it also gets the point across of what I am replying to at times. You will still be able to search for the keyword Jaw With John but know that I have now called my column Dear John.**

I need advice about my son. He has started doing bicycle training with a coach and some other cyclists, and he likes it a lot. But I continually hear about accidents with bicycles, and every time he goes, I am frightened for him.

My husband was a cyclist for many years, and he encourages him. I want to do the same, but fear stops me. What must I do? I pray every time he goes and surrender him to God. Is this the right way? — FEARFUL IN NICOSIA, CYPRUS

Dear Fearful:

All you can do is pray. Unless you want to follow him out there and take up cycling yourself!

But in all honesty, this isn’t the Tour de France. And most of the cyclists I come in contact with – not literal contact! I have not hit a cyclist with my car before! – are very vocal (and really, they’re a-holes: they rarely stop at stop signs, the ride much faster than the actual road speed limit, they take up full lanes when they’re not supposed to, etc etc etc) so if something should happen, I think the other cyclists with him will be there to help out. They will also prepare him for riding on his own and guide him on what to do – as can your husband. So relax, mom!

Just make sure he wears a helmet!

“Jaw With John” – Basket Case

I’m a college student on a campus where bikes are widely used, and I lent my bike to my roommate to use while I was away. She texted me, saying that she just got back to campus from a short break home and realized my bike had been stolen. Eventually she found the bike, but the basket had been removed.

Obviously I’m very glad it was found. Do I have the right to ask her to replace the stolen basket? It wasn’t cheap, and I feel like since it was taken under her watch she should replace it. I don’t want to be petty about it. We’re great roommates. What would be the best way to bring it up? — Conflicted”

Dear Conflicted:

She owes you a new basket plain and simple. The fact that she didn’t already offer to buy you a new one tells me that she doesn’t know she should buy you one.

It’s very simple: you can send her a link to the place where you originally bought the basket or she can buy something similar from Amazon or wherever. As long as you’re happy with the basket choice then all should be golden.

An Early Morning Bike Ride Around the Imperial Palace

Imagine if the US Government allowed road closures around the White House and then let people ride bikes around it. Sounds awesome but there would be detractors who would say it was a waste of tax payer dollars to close the roads and provide free bikes for people and then there would be the national security element and on and on and on which would ultimately lead to it never happening.

Good thing this is not the US.

Every Sunday, a roughly 3km set of road surrounding the Imperial Palace is closed to car traffic and 500 free bikes are available on a first-come-first-served basis. All it takes is a simple signature – I assume it is some sort of waiver – and you get to choose any bike you want.

Look at all these bikes!

It’s very simple to just hop on and ride and there are guards who point you in the correct direction. On the Sunday in November we were there, there is no one around to pressure us to finish our lap so we were able to ease into the ride and stop and take as many photos as we wanted.

Tokyo’s Finest

After completing the loop and returning to where we first picked up the bikes, it was time to actually enter the Imperial Palace gardens, which just so happened to also be free! We couldn’t ask for anything more!

First up was touring the outer portion of the Palace and admiring the architecture and scenery. Just as it was with the Meiji Shrine, it is amazing to find a place as serene and beautiful that is also surrounded by a metropolis. We were drawn to the Palace gates – mainly because there were numerous tour groups gathered in front taking group photos so we decided to see what was going on. As it turned out, it was the main entrance for the Emperor and Empress – who are very rarely seen.

Then it was time to head inside and tour the gardens.

There really isn’t a whole lot more to tell. The photos speak better than I could hope to and physically illustrate the beauty and majesty that is the Imperial Palace and the Gardens inside.
