A Slew of Seattle

I didn’t think I would be following up on that Mariners trip with another one so quickly. But here I am!

I had no plans on going to another game, especially since I had crossed the stadium in the 2024 season. But there I was in 2025 with another opportunity and many hours to kill, so I went with my coworkers to watch another Mariners game. I am not one to complain about seeing more baseball. And this night was a lot of fun.

Ignore the thumb. I was taking sneaky photos of dogs!

The start it off, it was Bark at the Park night! Dogs are allowed in the stadium if you can’t infer from the title. There were a lot of cute dogs. Let me tell you!

With this added opportunity to see T-Mobile Park, I could walk around more and get better angles of the stadium.

There is a gorgeous baseball bay chandelier as you enter behind the home plate gate. It isn’t gaudy or ostentatious. It feels appropriate. They almost look like snowflakes against the stark, dark ceiling and surroundings.

This time around, I had a truly great view of the game. Not that I didn’t have a great view before, but this view offered me a new perspective. We were positioned behind the Seattle dugout, and when the lighting was just right, I could snag a shot with the city skyline over left field.

I will keep this one brief so there will be more photos and less expounding on my trip. Except when it comes to the dogs!

I was trying to snag as many dog photos as I could. There were dogs in jerseys, dogs in hats, and dogs wearing scarves. It was so damn cute.

Then they started the “Simba Cam” and I couldn’t put my phone done. If you’re unfamiliar with Simba, he’s from The Lion King, and there is a scene at the beginning of the movie where Rafiki holds up the next king – a lion cub, Simba. He shows him off to the entire animal kingdom, and it’s a fantastic scene when you couple that with the music from Hans Zimmer and Elton John. But you knew all of that. I’m now only adding words to increase my word count for this piece…even though I just said I wouldn’t write as much this time. My bad.

Here are dog photos:

Gah!! Too cute!

Once the dog-centric things subsided, it was back to baseball. The Trashtros took the lead late in the game, and Seattle could not string together hits to save their life. But save their life, they did! They scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to retake the lead and closed it out in the 9th. Exciting baseball!

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Salmon Run or Mariner Moose again. So, here they are in photo form:

Overall, it was another successful baseball stadium trip.

There really wasn’t any reason for me to write about Seattle again except for the dogs I saw, and I got a clear picture of Mariner Moose this time. They also had the roof closed, a first for me in a place not named Tampa or Arizona.

Seattle is a nice stadium, and I wrote about it twice.

Dear John: It’s A Dog Eat New Ladyfriend World Out There

My late wife passed away two years ago. We always had a dog in our house. He died a year ago. I now have a new lady love in my life, but she doesn’t want a pet in her house. I’m dying to have another dog, and I don’t know what to do. Please advise.

— PETLESS IN TEXAS

Dear Petless,

Get a new lady. Dogs are the best.

“Jaw With John” – Are You Barking Mad?

My wife and I will soon be first-time grandparents, because our son and his wife are expecting. The problem is their dog.

When they met, his then-girlfriend had a “rescue” dog. As far as I can tell, this dog is vicious and completely out of control.

My son has been bitten at least twice, and the only times I have ever gotten close to the dog it attacked me. When company comes over, the dog is locked in the garage.

Our concern is what happens when they bring the baby home. “Oh, she’s just territorial” is the excuse we hear. Territorial? Wait until a new pet human shows up.

They have several nieces, ranging in age from 1 to 6. We live several states away. Would it be reasonable to ask for photos of the dog playing with the nieces as proof that this dog is safe with children?

We’ve also considered calling the other grandparents, but everyone spends all their energy keeping my son’s wife as happy as she can be.

We have talked about calling child welfare if it appears they plan to let the new baby and the dog live in the same house.

If we do that it would certainly destroy any future relationship, but someone has to have some sense. — Grandparent Prepared to Call CPS

Dear Grandparent:

You sound like a cat person.

Is “it reasonable to ask for photos of the dog playing with the nieces as proof that this dog is safe with children?” No. It’s entirely unreasonable. They don’t have to show you anything. Just because the dog doesn’t interact well with you doesn’t mean it doesn’t with others. Dogs can be picky. And as a rescue dog, they need more time to adjust to their new surroundings because they may only known a certain, awful, way of life.

What right do you have to call child protective services if they let the dog and baby live in the same house? None. It’s their dog and their baby. They will deal with it on their own terms. Any action you take regarding CPS will only hurt your relationship with you son and daughter-in-law.

“Jaw With John” – Cats Are Not Allowed in the Kitchen

We have a family situation that comes up every year during the holidays. My son and his wife have no kids. Their animals are treated like their children.

Every year we are invited to their house for a holiday dinner. Their cats have free roam of the house and their litter box is in the kitchen next to where we sit down to eat.

That is bad enough, but while we are there the cats use the litter box and then jump up on the counter (where their food is) to eat and also to be petted — all while my daughter-in-law makes the dinner.

We get so sick at this sight that we barely eat any dinner.

We look forward to spending time with them and have made a slight reference to the cat litter box, but our daughter-in-law is not about to change. To her these cats are her kids.

We are worried that if we say anything the relationship with my son will suffer. What should we do? We just don’t want to eat in that kitchen again! — Stuck in the Litter

Dear Stuck:

Cats are awful, terrible creatures. Tell them to ditch the cats and switch to dogs. Dogs are the best.

Cats are too unwieldy and no matter how much you train them, they can snap at any moment. You know what you’re getting with dogs, no surprises. Dogs also do their business OUTSIDE and not next to where you prepare food – unless you prep meals outside … on the grass/dirt.

Your daughter-in-law sounds like a crazy cat lady and they can’t be reasoned with at all. BUT, if you’re trying to lose weight this sounds like a great way to do it! Look at those cats walking around near your food and eat less! Otherwise, steer clear of cats in general. They suck.
